New program updates approved at Statewide Conference:
Texas Photo ID & Redistricting Await Supreme Court Ruling
Texas is among the states currently required to obtain federal approval prior to implementing changes in elections, such as the redistricting plans and voter photo ID requirement passed by the 2011 Texas Legislature. In late August 2012, separate D.C. district court panels refused to pre-clear redistricting plans and photo ID. Texas has appealed both denials to the Supreme Court, and both appeals are on hold until the Supreme Court rules on a challenge to the constitutionality of the preclearance requirement. The ruling is expected by the end of June, and more should be known about what will happen with redistricting and photo ID once the ruling is made.
