President's Message:
Grace Chimene

Imagine America without a free and fair democracy.

Someone walked up to me yesterday and said, “I know you! You are in those videos for the League.” She went on to say, “Did you ever think our American democracy was going to be the top issue folks would be fighting about" No, I certainly did not!

Our governor has called a special session for July 8th. His plan seems to focus on anti-democratic legislation which impacts our American democratic process and our freedom to vote.

This July 4th weekend I was imagining an America without a free and fair democracy....

I’m not thinking about what I oppose…
  • the governor’s defunding of a vital branch of our government,
  • making it more complicated to vote for older and disabled voters,
  • criminalizing patriotic election workers,
  • limiting the number of polling places in communities of color, or
  • making it easier for a losing candidate to overturn an election…

am thinking about what I do support!
I support the League of Women Voters with my time and my money. I believe 100% in the League’s mission of empowering voters, defending democracy!

  • The right to vote is a critical principle of our democracy.
  • Our democracy is stronger when every American voter can cast a vote and have it count.
  • We should encourage every American voter to cast a ballot in every election to make their voices heard.
  • We want our election system to be free, fair, and accessible to all eligible voters
  • It should be easier, not harder, to vote.
  • Americans should be able to register to vote at any time, including on Election Day.
  • Our government should respond to the will of the people, not the interests of powerful corporations and wealthy donors.
  • Secure elections ensured by investments in upgraded equipment, expanded staffing for election administrators, and more training for poll workers.
  • Expanding voter access benefits all political parties.
  • We need national standards for voting access, like the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. (Take Action here now!)

In honor of the birth of our nation, take a moment to support democracy! Join me and make a donationto support the League's work to empower voters and defend democracy today. No matter what voting and election legislation comes out of the Special Session of the Texas Legislature, we will all still have a lot of work to do!

Thank you for standing with the League to empower voters and defend democracy.

NEW Action Alert - Allow Election Officials To Do Their Jobs!

Election officials, those whose jobs are to administer elections in their communities, were under attack during the regular session. Bills restricting these officials’ power to decide how best to serve the voters in their communities are likely to resurface during the July special session.
NEW Action Alert - Protect Vote by Mail!

Tell your legislator that you support a vote by mail process that is easily accessible to those who need it. Imposing more restrictions on vote by mail was the aim of several bills introduced during the regular session - these restrictions are likely to reappear during the special session.
