League of Women Voters Texas Expects Voter Registration Boost Following Supreme Court’s Roe v Wade D

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The League of Women Voters Texas is one of several state advocacy groups that have been registering citizens to vote in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday to overturn Roe v Wade.

Texas is one of several states that subsequently enacted trigger laws, severely limiting or outlawing abortion.

League President Joyce LeBombard said she believes the ruling will have a direct impact on the mid-term elections in November.

“There’s so many young women who have never known a life without having access to their reproductive healthcare. There’s still many women that were alive before Roe v Wade and they’re angered. I think its going to drive a lot of people to the ballot box,” she said.

Protests were held across the Metroplex and nationwide over the weekend. There were some minor clashes between demonstrators but the rallies were mostly peaceful.

LeBombard encourages citizens to turn their feelings about this issue into political action at the polls.

“Don’t just bring yourself…bring a friend…utilize that anger and being upset into something positive to make positive change for us,” she said.

There are more rallies planned around the Metroplex and throughout Texas this week. The League of Women Voters Texas will have voter registration booths at some of them.

The League issued a statement that read in part:

“The ruling  is an assault on the constitutional guarantee to equal protection of the laws and the right to due process. With this decision, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and other historically marginalized communities have no guarantees that their civil rights will be protected.

We stand with our reproductive rights partners and all who fear the dangerous consequences of this decision.

LWV Texas will continue our efforts to register voters, inform them on candidates position in our nonpartisan Voters Guide and VOTE411, and to mobilize everyone to get out and vote.”
