League of Women Voters of Texas Ramps Up Efforts on National Voter Registration Day

LWV Texas | Published on 9/22/2020
Do you have a voting plan

Austin - On September 22, 2020, the League of Women Voters of Texas will celebrate National Voter Registration Dayalong with a massive cross-country effort to register voters well in advance of Election Day this November.

With a historic presidential election approaching, every eligible American voter should exercise his or her right to be heard at the ballot box, and National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) is the right day to start by getting registered. Leagues across Texas are planning to use National Voter Registration Day to increase voter participation.

The League of Women Voters is the largest nonpartisan voter registration organization taking part in the NVRD. To maintain these traditions, local Leagues in Texas are planning a variety of National Voter Registration Day actions. League activities include safe in-person voter registration events, drive-through voter registration events, online candidate forums, and webinars. Contact your local League to learn what they are doing - and what you can do - in your community.

As well as facilitating voter registration, Leagues will be encouraging citizens to plan to vote safely for the November 3rd General Election. This includes applying to vote by mail if they qualify, taking advantage of early voting (Oct. 13 - 30), and voting during nonpeak hours on November 3rd.

The League is a nonpartisan organization, the League does not support or oppose any political party or candidate for elected office. "We want to make it easy for citizens in Texas to be informed and active participants in our government," said Grace Chimene, President of the League of Women Voters of Texas. "Our VOTE411.org website has information about voter registration, voter ID's required in Texas, as is going live today with nonpartisan information about the statewide candidates on the ballot. By the time early voting starts, information VOTE411.org will also have information about candidates in our local League communities."

NVRD's main purpose is to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to those who may not register otherwise. For those already registered, the League recommends the following ways to participate in the day:

  1. Double-check that all voter information is accurate and up-to-date on the Secretary of State's VoteTexas.gov website.
  2. Make a personalized plan for election day on Vote411.org
  3. Become a volunteer deputy registrar in your county.

History of National Voter Registration Day
