Action News! November 2024

Election Day is Almost Here – Let’s Make a Difference Together!

With Election Day fast approaching, now is a crucial time to ensure every eligible Texan has the information and resources needed to fully participate in our democracy. This is an ideal moment to remind friends, family, and neighbors about polling locations, hours, and the importance of voter turnout. Let's keep working together to make sure every Texan’s vote counts.

It’s important to understand that the election outcome isn't immediately determined when the polls close onNovember5th. The results announced that night are preliminary. The official results, which take weeks to finalize, are the product of a meticulous, multistep counting process. The Brennan Center for Justice provides a comprehensive guide that outlines the 10 key steps involved—from ballot counting to result verification and final certification. This process ensures that every vote is accurately counted, underscoring the importance of a thorough, accurate tally over a swift one.

Elections empower us to shape our future. Once cast, every vote deserves the respect of accurate processing, whatever the outcome. Election officials are steadfast in their commitment to ballot security at each stage, ensuring an accurate and reliable count. Your vote matters and will be counted with the utmost care and precision.

As members, volunteers, and supporters of the League, your contributions to ensuring this election is fair, safe, and accessible are truly invaluable. Regardless of the results, we deeply appreciate your unwavering dedication to our democracy. Together, we are actively shaping a stronger, more informed Texas.

In unity and gratitude,

P.S. The League of Women Voters of Texas is working tirelessly to advocate for all Texans this election season and beyond. Donate today to support our mission of empowering voters and defending democracy!

Over 100 Years of Voters Guides!

The League of Women Voters of Texas has been providing nonpartisan Voters Guides for over 100 years! This year, we printed and mailed LWV Texas Voters Guides to libraries, food banks, supporters and, in some areas, directly to voters across Texas.

The online, interactive version of the Guide, VOTE411.org, now includes information in both English and Spanish for the Presidential candidates! Web-friendly, printable versions of the Voters Guide in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Simple Chinese will be available at LWVTexas.org.

Election Canvassing and Certification Request Letters

LWV Texas, alongside a coalition of nonpartisan organizations, has sent letters to all Elections Administrators and County Commissioners' Courts, reminding them of their critical duties for canvassing and certifying election results in accordance with Texas law.

The letters urge these officials to publicly affirm their commitment to timely canvassing and certifying theNovember5th,2024, General Election results within their counties. This assurance is essential for public confidence, especially in light of recent instances where officials in some areas have considered delaying or refusing to complete vote counts. Read the letters here and here.

Additionally, this coalition plans to send a similar letter to Governor Abbott.

It's Not Too Late to Become a Poll Monitor!

It’s the last week of early voting and it is not too late to become a poll monitor. Poll monitors are essential in safeguarding the voting process—by observing polling locations, answering voters' questions, and reporting any concerns.

The final virtual poll monitor training session is scheduled forNovember2nd at 11:00 a.m. CSTThis session is a great opportunity to prepare to help protect Texas voters on Election Day. Additionally, a recorded training session is available anytime through Election Day for those who prefer flexibility.

If you're already trained, please consider signing up for an Election Day shift. Thank you for your dedication to this crucial election protection effort!

LWV Amarillo in the New Yorker!

"In mid-October, at a bank in downtown Amarillo, the local chapter of the League of Women Voters hosted an educational forum about proposed ordinances that would be on the ballot in November. Most were procedural—adding members to the city council, changing the process for a recall vote—but the real energy in the room circulated around Proposition A, also known as the “Sanctuary City for the Unborn Ordinance.”
