The League of Women Voters of Texas released the following statement on 2/12/26 regarding the Texas Secretary of State’s cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice's request for unredacted voter lists:
"The League of Women Voters of Texas, alongside other voting rights organizations, strongly condemns the Texas Secretary of State’s decision to provide the unredacted voter registration data of 18.4 million Texans to the U.S. Department of Justice when it was not legally required. Sharing sensitive personal information, including dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, and partial Social Security numbers, needlessly puts Texans’ privacy at risk.
This action heightens concerns about improper voter purges based on flawed or incomplete data. Texas has previously and wrongly flagged eligible voters, particularly naturalized citizens, during similar efforts. We urge state officials to protect Texans’ privacy and voting rights, comply fully with federal and state law, and ensure that no eligible voter is improperly removed from the rolls."
On February 12, 2026, LWV Texas, ACLU of Texas, the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute, Asian Texans for Justice, and the Texas Civil Rights Project sent a joint letter to the Texas Secretary of State's Office (SOS) raising concern about the SOS providing the unredacted voter registration data of 18.4 million Texans to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) when it was not legally required.
